The upper grades are where our ambitious goals for Avenues graduates, defined in our mission statement, are most comprehensively realized. Our students will be:
Accomplished in all the academic skills you would expect
At ease beyond their borders
Confident because they excel in a particular passion
Developing empathetic listeners, confident presenters and young people who see the world from multiple perspectives
Exchange refers to the discussion-based method of instruction used in humanities classes in the upper grades. Inspired by the Harkness method developed at Phillips Exeter Academy, Exchange uses a round table to move the focus of the class from the teacher to the other students and the texts under discussion.
Across all subject areas, the approach in the upper grades is interdisciplinary and often project-based, enabling students to learn by tackling real-world problems through multiple perspectives. The curriculum includes:
- Intensive language: Mandarin or Spanish
- Integrated science
- Discussion-based math
- The World Course and global humanities
- Arts electives
- Wellness and Movement
