On December 12, Avenues Shenzhen hosted the OPEN.Ed Education Forum, featuring renowned author, psychologist, and media personality Shiuan Liu. With a background in psychology and education from Harvard University, Liu has shared his insights on parenting, resilience, and emotional well-being through 18 books, five TEDx talks, and a globally recognized podcast with over one million listeners.
Parenthood is one of life’s most profound and challenging journeys. In his keynote talk, Liu explored how open communication, mutual respect, and strong family connections create an environment where children can thrive with confidence and resilience.
He posed thought-provoking questions:
How can we build deeper family connections through open and respectful dialogue?
In what ways do parenting styles shape a child’s confidence and adaptability?
How can we balance guidance and independence while supporting our children’s growth?
Liu emphasized that parenting is not about control but about being present, offering trust, and creating a supportive space where children feel seen and heard. He encouraged parents to shift from a mindset of authority to one of partnership, where children develop the courage to explore their identities and pursue their passions.
Through engaging storytelling, psychological insights, and practical strategies, Liu challenged attendees to redefine the essence of parenting—not as a role of command, but as one of guidance and connection.
Liu highlighted that true parental influence comes from fostering a sense of security and belonging. By prioritizing care, trust, and encouragement, parents can empower children to navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence, knowing they have a safe foundation to return to.
This OPEN.Ed Forum reinforced Avenues’ belief that education extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of family life. As we continue to explore the evolving landscape of parenting and education, we invite more families to join us in shaping a future where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
