SECONDARY DIVISION

Our Secondary Division includes Middle Grades Program (Grades 6-9) and Upper Grades Program (Grades 10-12). Both Middle Grades and Upper Grades Program is adopting a unique, fully-project based approach to adolescent education. Students encounter engaging, interdisciplinary projects in English that challenge them to develop core thinking skills like empathy, planning, reasoning creativity and meta-cognition, all while developing a strong academic foundation that prepares them for further study. Teachers work in tight teams to design and iterate projects that make authentic connections between school and the real world. Student well-being is a key focus that unites our school community.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

At Avenues, science classes are interdisciplinary. Science teachers work closely with each other and other English Project teachers to design interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences. Avenues science teachers ensure that students act as scientists every day: asking questions, conducting investigations in our brand-new labs, and using science to learn about and engage with the world around them. In grades 6-9, we teach a rigorous, project-based curriculum that integrates fundamental concepts and skills from the physical, life, and earth sciences along with introductory robotics and engineering. In grades 10-12, you will help establish a new model of high school education with project-based learning and specialized, disciplinary STEM electives courses by mentoring, guiding, and providing feedback as students create, build, and discuss solutions to real-world problems. As an Avenues science teacher, you will:

  • Support the development of essential academic and STEM skills through interdisciplinary projects and readings
  • Ensure that students achieve key learning outcomes in physical and life sciences, targeting instruction thoughtfully to address diverse individual needs
  • Design, implement, and refine project-based learning experiences that give students access to curricular content and skills through authentic, purpose-driven, real-world projects
  • Collaborate intensively with colleagues to design learning outcomes, monitor growth, and thoughtfully address individual student needs, particularly for ESL learners.
  • Deeply connect with students, colleagues and parents to uphold a culture of welcome, safety and respect
  • Invoke a robust learning atmosphere that leads students to value being at school and feel part of a rigorous and joyful learning community
  • Inspire trust and confidence among parents and families
